Research

In COMM 416 class, we have decided our target audience and created roughly idea for our movie project. During week three until four, Jasmine and I were doing some research through Youtube and television, looking for some examples for our project documentation visual style. Honestly, it is pretty complicated, because even though we have found several ideas but both of us agree not to use them because most of them are fully editing, otherwise too depressed. However, we might use some of the sound design statement or aural style from these videos, but we still not sure which one is the most suitable for our simple video documentation.
However, I want to share the links to all of the readers. Well these are two of videos that I like for our project documentation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ42Jwg6GhY
This video won the Singapore Merit Award in 2009. This video was made due to the increasing of cyber-bullying in Singaporean Schools. The video is pretty simple in editing and the shoot, however the aural
and visual style are not really suitable with our idea because we want to make a semi advertisement video for our campaign project. So, we ditch this one.

This video is the illustration of the side effect of cyber-bullying. It was made in the cooperation with Childnet International in order to raise social awareness, especially to the bully. The idea of storytelling of this video is very relevant to our campaign and project documentation, because we aim to focus on the bully alongside with the victim and the other parties around the victims such as family and friend. I and Jasmine are agreed to use this video as one of our major idea for our video storytelling and visual style statement. For some people, this video might be pretty depressed because it was shoot with documentary style, but that is what makes this video different and honestly, this video is very touching.

This is one of the video which match with our idea for the video visual style. This video features Tim Cahill, Mathew Lloyd and Corey Payne who talk in semi documentary and interview style. This visual style is very relevant to our idea as we want to make our project documentation in semi advertisement and features few people to talk about the victim of the cyber-bullying. Well, we haven’t sure yet, but this video has the highest rank in our mind due to its simplicity and featuring good looking men =)

This project really makes us nervous; there are so many videos with brilliant ideas and great visual statement. However, it is too complicated to get the visual and editing statement because we want to stick with simplicity and send our message straight to the point without any complicated editing.

Start Where Your Target Audience Is

This is my first encounter in making a video for our campaign project about Cyberbullying, hence I need to write any idea or development in this blog for the assignment criteria in the subject communication skills IV ( COMM 416).

Firstly, I and Jasmine have decided to make this video as simple as we can because there are only two of us in this group. Moreover, before we start to decide what kind of video that we are going to filming, we have targeted our audience in COMM 419 class because we believe in marketing statement: “start where your audience is”.

Our target market will be divided into two, primary and secondary. For the primary, We will focus on the bully because we want to make something different, as what we found in research, the target market in cyberbullying campaign advertisement are usually the victim. Furthermore, the secondary will be the victim, the parents, and authorized parties or institution.

The video that we are going to shoot is going to be semi documentary and has an advertisement style. The video will be a short two- three minutes video. Well, we did several research on the video about cyberbullying, but we have not decided how we are going to create the story telling, however we want to portray a realistic portrayal of the serve negative effects of cyberbullying upon the victim and persons around them.

Decisions, Decisions...

Welcome to my blog, my name is Jasmine and as a part of my assignment criteria for the subject communication skills IV I am documenting the development of my project which is to create a short video. Working alongside Sherlly Fu, our small group has decided to create a video which may be used on our campaign’s website which we will be creating in production skills IV.

In these beginning stages of planning and idea generation our group decided on two major factors we would agree to,
  • 1.      The topic of our video would defiantly feature our campaign cyber bullying. We felt this was appropriate because we are already so familiar with the topic that knowledge will only continue to grow and therefore we would save time researching another issue.

  • 2.      We hope to use of video on our website so that our website may portray a realistic portrayal of the serve negative effects of cyber bullying upon the victim as well as the people who may be involved in the incident. We feel by portraying cyber bullying effects upon the family, a friend, perhaps a teacher and the bully we can depict how significant cyber bullying is within our society.  In relation to our website we believe this is the perfect opportunity to create a video which may inspire our audience to take steps in preventing online harassment, speak out against cyber bullying if they are being targeted or know someone who may be or stop bullying if they are the bully themselves.

Due to our group only consisting of the two of us, Sherly and I will be creating a short two – three minute video which will be shot in the style of an advertisement. We feel that by creating an advertisement we can further improve our skills with the camera and computer based editing. This project will require a lot of time and energy in order to produce a successful end result, which we hope to achieve!
